Memorial Day

Does anyone else find it strange that people wish each other a "Happy Memorial Day". I mean the holiday in itself is a solemn occasion to honor heroes that have lost their lives serving our country. What is happy about it? People get off work, businesses close, families take vacations. That is not what this holiday is about. I am not going to stand on my soapbox for a long post but if you are reading this, I hope you take a few moments today to think of what the day really means.

Here is an interesting article about how Memorial Day was meant to be observed

Smells like....

I have a feeling Evan is going to be a class clown. He loves to make people laugh. Yesterday he held out his hand and said "Mom, what's it smell like?". I told him no thanks but I would rather not smell them. I asked what he thought they smelled like. He took a big sniff and said "Hands!". I totally cracked up. I am not sure what hands are supposed to smell like but apparently Evan knows (I hope soap). Now he sniffs his hand really hard and giggles.

Working in the Coal Mine...

Not really but I bet A&E would. Their newfound love...playing in the dirt! Well Avery has never been afraid but Evan has a little bit of OCD (like his daddy) and didn't like to get dirty until recently. Now I can't keep these kids clean.

They will be sad when the sod is put down on the neighbor's yard.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Mine grows quite nicely with these adorable little helpers watering it.

My strawberries are kind of a sad story though. We only get 1 or 2 ripe ones a week. Those are quickly eaten by a strawberry monster.

Pool Party!

It has been so hot here. I got out A&E's pools the other day and we did some of the foam animal capsules with the neighbor kids. Soon A&E were dipping their feet in and Avery sat down in it. I thought it would be better if I put on their swimsuits and just let them go at it. We actually have a bigger pool so don't start collecting money for the "Buy Those Poor Kids a Decent Size Pool" fund. They had a blast in these baby pools! However, we do need to go shopping for new swimsuits that fit.

The Princess and the Frog

Another great movie. :) Avery is such a tomboy. She found 2 frogs behind the toy box outside. She carried those things around forever. Evan and I weren't as fond of them.

Thankfully by dinner I had convinced her they had to live outside in their own habitat. Thanks Diego for being a good influence!

Sorry the video looks off-center. I always forget that photobucket videos are too wide for the blog. You get the idea though.

How To Train Your Sister

A&E's new favorite movie is How To Train Your Dragon. They are still talking about it weeks later. They were playing dragon and viking and I got some pics!

They made up at the end though

All the single mommies....

I have the utmost respect for single parents. Just the short bouts of it that I go through is enough to drive me nuts. Andy has a training flight this weekend and A&E plus 2 dogs is enough to drive anyone to drink....if I drank that is.

On top of just every day stuff, I walked into A&E's bathroom to find this!

If you don't know, I am terrified of spiders! That is Andy's job - to kill the spiders in or around the vicinity of our house. It was in a weird spot so I couldn't use a shoe (my usual weapon of choice if Andy is gone). I tried rinsing it down but it was so big it wouldn't fit under the stopper. I ended up splashing it until it walked up the side a bit, pulled out the stopper as fast as I could, then poured a cup of water over him to get him down the drain. I am still traumatized! I wonder where A&E get their fear of bugs!

We have been hanging out with the neighbors a lot. A&E just love their girls. I love having an adult to talk to instead of 2 toddlers and 2 dogs. They don't always get my sarcasm. :)

We made this daddy calendar for this trip so A&E can keep up with how many days until daddy gets home. I think we may do this on his deployment instead of a ginormous paper chain!

Dognapper

I love dogs (except Murphy 75% of the time). I am especially a sucker for puppies. However, there are certain spawns of satan...I mean dogs on our street that I cannot stand. These dogs mated and had puppies. The stuff of nightmares, right? The mommy and daddy dog (who is missing now) chase cars, adults, kids, and yap all day long. They are annoying. I didn't expect much more out of their offspring.

Our neighbor next door decided to adopt one of said pups. Can you sense my excitement? He works long hours and leaves the puppy out in his backyard to whine and bark. Thankfully the little thing has gotten better and doesn't whine the entire 12-13 hours he is at work.

The first week I couldn't take it and went and got the little bugger so it wouldn't be so lonely. Andy practically threatened my life and told me we were not going to be taking care of another dog. :)

How sweet is she though?
Photobucket

We went a week or so and was getting her every afternoon. Avery loves to pick her up and carry her around. She calls it "my puppy". She got in her car the other day and said "daddy push me, I'm holding my puppy".
Photobucket

Thankfully "Puppy" as we call her has gotten much better and can be by herself while her owner is at work. I was tired of saying "be careful, Avery", "don't squeeze her, Avery", "tell it no, Evan". Puppies are a lot of work...even when you dognap them.

Skating

Our local skating rink has a Tot Skate time on Tuesday morning. You pay a few bucks and take your kids to skate, play in the ball pit, ride trikes, and bounce in the bouncy houses. We have been a couple times but A&E were more brave this time in the skates. The skate wheels actually lock so they were really walking around in them.

Happy Cinco De Mayo

aka the Mexican version of St Patrick's Day for those who drink. ;)

What would any mom do but spend the afternoon watching episodes Dora and Diego. I'm really living the wild life here. We are also have taquitos for dinner! Don't get too excited. I bake them right out of the box. :)

How did you spend your Cinco De Mayo?

You like WHAT??

So this story is a little off-color and I was debating on whether or not I should post it on the blog but it cracks me up so I will share. If this offends you, don't read it again. ;)

One day while Andy was gone as I was cooking dinner, Evan walked in and said to me "Mommy, I like black chicks". Imagine my open mouth and complete silence here. I was shocked to say the least. I asked him to say it again two more times and he repeats the same thing! I admit that I use the word "chick" when I talk about other women sometimes but I have never said anything like that!

Why were these words coming out of my baby boy's mouth? I was mad and upset. We don't talk about race. Where did he learn this? So I start grilling him and asking him where he heard that and did someone at school tell him that. He mumbles something about school and I am all fired up. I am ready to call the director and complain or call his teacher and ask why she lets kids talk like this in her classroom.

So I am telling him that isn't a nice thing to say and we should like everyone. He says "no mommy, I like black chick" then starts pointing to their Easter picture on our refrigerator. Their teacher had brought in 2 yellow chicks and 1 black chick to take Easter pictures and Evan is holding the little black chick. He prefers black chicks over yellow chicks I guess......

Tornadoes, tempers, and tears oh my!

This nasty weather in Arkansas has been crazy this weekend. We had bad thunderstorms the past couple of nights and some tornadoes touched down in the area. Thankfully we are all okay and it is over. It is going through TN now and Nashville is a mess.

Oh the terrible three's. You thought it was 2, right? So did I! The attitude is out of this world with A&E. I get "no" and "I said no" much more often lately. You'd think Avery is teething again with her attitude but she has all her teeth for now. I feel like I am constantly fussing at someone. We started using "1,2,3 Magic" a few months ago and that has helped save my sanity. It is a discipline method that uses counting and time-outs. I rarely make it past 2 but I use it often.

In some ways, this age is more fun because they can communicate better and they have such great imaginations. They love to pretend now. They are often "Dora and Diego" or "Buzz and Jessie". It is so cute to watch. They also like to tease us. I taught Evan to say "Daddy loves the Cowboys". Andy does not find it amusing.

We have been staying busy with activities and they still love their power wheels. We got our new patio poured this week so we have been outside as much as possible. We even have visits from the neighbor's puppy (which Avery loves). That is a whole new post though.
